QUESTION:

Hi. What's a good home remedy that gets rid of jock itch quickly and keeps it away? This bloody rash is driving me crazy! I can't stand it any longer and it's embarrassing when I have to scratch "down there" at the gym. For the sake of my genitals, please help!

ANSWER:

Yes you are right Tom, jock itch can drive you bloody crazy! Being an athlete myself, I've had a few run-ins with this particular problem. Sweating of course makes it much worse, which is why you feel the need to scratch when exercising.

For those who are unfamiliar with jock itch (tinea cruris), this "rash" is a fungal infection or type of ringworm that mainly affects the inner thighs, genitals and buttocks. It's actually quite a common infection that usually strikes athletes or people who tend to sweat alot, primarily because it thrives on moisture (sweat) and warmth. Jock itch is easily identifiable by its red, ringed shape rash - some of the symptoms include itching, inflammation, burning and skin flaking. Jock itch is contagious (mildly) so it's a good idea to avoid sharing towels or clothing with others if you have this condition.

Thankfully, getting rid of jock itch and getting rid of it in a hurry (overnight) is easy to do when using a few simple home remedies. Here's 8 of the best you might like to consider...

How to Get Rid of Jock Itch Remedy #1... Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV): Apple cider vinegar contains some powerful antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. If you want to get rid of your jock itch overnight (or relieve it significantly), this should definitely be your remedy of choice. Simply go out and purchase some organic ACV with the "mother" (like these) and using one or two cotton balls, apply the apple cider vinegar directly to your rash (make sure the area is completely dry first). Be aware though that this will sting to begin with, so be ready! You can dilute the ACV with water if you like but this does decrease it's effectiveness. Be sure to apply the ACV as many times throughout the day as you can (3 times at minimum), particularly before going to bed. In addition, to help kill the fungus and keep your jock itch away for good, it's also a good idea to drink the apple cider vinegar every day (destroys the infection from the inside out). Mix a tablespoon of ACV in a glass of warm filtered water and drink down twice daily.

Home Remedy for Jock Itch #2... Rubbing Alcohol: Another terrific way to get rid of jock itch fast is by applying some rubbing alcohol to the affected area. Rubbing alcohol helps keep the area dry (remember, the infection thrives in warm, moist places), along with quickly destroying the fungus that's causing the rash. Buy some rubbing alcohol (at least 90% solution if you can get it) and apply directly to your jock itch. Once again, this will sting at first, but it doesn't last for long. Once you do get over the initial burn, you'll notice some amazing relief from that awful itchiness. Apply this solution 3 times a day as well for best results. Here's what rubbing alcohol looks like if you haven't seen or heard of it... Rubbing Alcohol Concentrate

How to Get Rid of Jock Itch Remedy #3... Organic Coconut Oil: Yet another potent antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal food, coconut oil has been used for centuries to treat skin problems such as eczema, candida, and jock itch/genital itch. Coconut oil is most effective when used externally AND consumed internally. Consume 2-3 tablespoons of organic virgin coconut oil (must be this type) every day, along with applying the oil directly to your jock itch after showering. Coconut oil doesn't burn either so you don't need to worry about this.

Natural Remedy for Jock Itch #4... Hydrogen Peroxide (HP) & Petroleum Jelly: Hydrogen peroxide is proven to eradicate virtually every bacteria or fungal infection in the body. And tinea cruris is certainly on it's list! When combined with petroleum jelly, it works even better (I'm not a fan of petroleum jelly, however, in this case it does work very well). Make sure you don't use the HP exclusively on it's own as it can burn. All you do is apply some of the 3% grade hydrogen peroxide (only use this grade) to the affected area using a cotton ball, then apply some Vaseline jelly over the top after for a soothing effect. Repeat this process another 2 or 3 times throughout the day for some extra fast healing and relief.

Home Remedy for Jock Itch #5... Borax/Salt Bath: Both borax and salt are powerful anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory agents. They definitely help to control the growth of fungal infections, along with speeding up the healing of infections. Run yourself a nice warm bath and add 1/2 cup of salt (Epsom salt is best) and 1/2 cup of borax powder. Dissolve thoroughly then sit and relax in this for 20-30 minutes.

Other Do's and Don'ts for Getting Rid of Jock Itch Permanently...

- DO eat properly: If you regularly eat refined and processed foods, particularly lots of sugary foods, then fungal problems such as jock itch will be a common occurrence. The reason? Fungus feeds off sugar. It loves it! So make sure you avoid all processed sugars (not natural sugars) and take a good quality probiotic supplement. Probiotics fight off and destroy fungus in the body so make sure you don't skip over this one. Be sure to eat plenty of garlic as well. Garlic contains lots of potent anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory properties (and it tastes great in your cooking too!) Fresh fruits and vegetables, especially green leafy vegetables, along with healthy whole grains, are what you should also be looking to eat every day.

- DO try tea tree oil: If you find nothing else is working then give tea tree oil a go. This strong anti fungal agent works well, although you do need to be cautious. Tea tree oil can burn over and above what you should experience so make sure you dilute it if you're going to try it. Combine 3-4 drops of tea tree oil with an ounce of olive oil and apply directly to the affected area 3 times daily.

- DO use oregano oil: Oregano oil works also, but like tea tree oil, will burn if don't dilute it first. Combine 3-4 drops or oregano oil with one ounce of coconut oil and apply to your jock itch morning, noon and night.

So there you go Tom. Hopefully you find something there that helps give your genitals that well earned break! lol.

Good luck and all the best to you!
